Wisdom of Patience

When Trees Wake Too Early, Stress Follows.

This week in the field, we saw something tender — a lilac shrub already leafing out, bees moving, insects stirring — all in the quiet heart of winter.

Along the Front Range, unusually warm temperatures are waking plants weeks ahead of schedule. This is called a “false spring,” a period when warmth arrives before winter has truly passed. It feels hopeful, but it carries risk.

In nature, timing is everything. When shrubs and fruit trees break dormancy early, their new growth becomes vulnerable. If freezing temperatures return — and they often do in Colorado — tender leaves and buds can be damaged.

Most plants recover.
They regroup.
They try again.

But early growth costs energy. And when energy is spent before the season is steady, plants benefit from extra support — steady moisture at the roots, protection from added stress, and patience while conditions settle.

Tend to Your Roots

Strength returns when we nourish what is below the surface and allow the true season to arrive in its own time. If your trees have begun to wake early, this is the moment to support their roots, reduce stress, and steady their growth before the next cold front arrives.

We know what it is to mistake a moment of warmth for a lasting season. To open ourselves too quickly, believing it is time — only to feel the chill return. False springs remind us that growth requires alignment with timing. Expansion without readiness creates strain. And when that happens — in trees or in people — the answer is not panic or force. It is tending the roots. It is conserving energy, staying grounded and resisting the urge to cut away too quickly.
